Standard Water Heater
Pros – First, a standard water heaters are initially much more affordable than the tank-less option. Most homes have a standard water heater with all the correct piping in place. This cuts down on the labor spent on replacing it. Most installs take a few hours and the only equipment needed is the tank, gas flex and connection. Secondly, a standard water heater ensures instant hot water for up to an hour, until the tank is emptied. The duration does depend on the size of tank and the demand in the home.
Cons – Standard Water Heaters are not designed to last a long time. This is due to the minerals and sediment in your water. If not properly maintained, these minerals can cause buildup and the weight of the buildup can cause the inside tank to crack. Once the inside tank has cracked there is no way to replace it. If you have hard water, this can cause the buildup in the tank to happen faster.
Tank-less Water Heater
Pros – First, Tank-less Water Heaters are much more efficient than the standard option. This is due to the fact, that a tank-less does not hold water and does not have to continuously heat the water for when you need it. You only Pay for the hot water you need and because of this reason a tank-less can reduce your energy bill (for hot water) as much as 30%. Secondly, Tank-less Water Heaters are designed to last longer with proper maintenance.
Cons – Initial cost is about 3 to 4 times the amount of a Standard. A tank-less water heater is more labor intense, and Installation can take up to a day to a day and a half. In addition, there is more equipment used in this installation.
